Social Action Committee

The committee identifies areas of need within
the synagogue and surrounding communities
and acquires resources to address their needs.

Ongoing and annual activities of the Committee include the Passover Food Drive, Hunger Awareness Day, the Pushka Campaign, helping needy families for the winter holidays, and clothing drives. The committee also provides fire victim relief and assists various agencies, such as Jewish Family Services, Amandla Crossing, and "Elijah's Promise" food pantry.

Help a Needy Family

This program is sponsored by the Social Action Committee to help needy families for the winter holidays. The families are referred to us by various sources including Jewish Family Services, local welfare directors, social workers, and senior centers.

Each family provides us with a "wish list" of their needs which typically includes items such as towels, sheets, blankets, clothing, shoes, coats, and children's toys.

Please mail checks payable to: Congregation B'nai Tikvah's Holiday Program.

Hunger Awareness Day

The congregation's first Hunger Awareness Day was held in October 2003. The day consists of a variety of activities intended to raise awareness about hunger and efforts to collect food and money to alleviate hunger. All food that is collected is donated to a local food pantry. All proceeds are given to Mazon.

The Social Action Committee encourages all member families to make a contribution to Mazon this fall. Suggested donations are $1 per family member, $18 per family, or $18 per family member depending on the family's resources. You can fill out the form below if you would like to make a pledge. Or simply mail a check to synagogue office made out to Mazon.

Please send a nonperishable food item to religious school or nursery school with your children.
