Religious School

Jewish education at B'nai Tikvah is a
blend of book learning and personal
exploration, linking us to each other
through shared personal experiences.

Our Religious School provides a Jewish education for members' children from Kindergarten through High School. The School's educational philosophy is based on these three ideals: 1) developing a positive Jewish feeling and attitude; 2) learning significant Jewish knowledge; 3) promoting real involvement in and service to the Jewish community.

  • Primary School
  • Middle School
  • Chai School
  • Our professional teaching staff works closely with the Rabbi, Cantor, School Director, and Religious School Committee to guarantee that our children receive a strong foundation in Hebrew language (oral, reading and writing), prayer, Jewish history, and the observance of Jewish rituals, customs, and ceremonies.

Our teachers use the most modern teaching methods, audio-visual materials, hands-on activities, and other teaching aids. The curriculum is enriched by special programs in art and music, assemblies, holiday celebrations, and special projects and activities for each grade level.

During the year, each class holds a special Parent and Child Together (PACT) program which gives each child an opportunity to study a Jewish topic together with his/her parents.

    Primary School
The goals of the primary school program are to introduce children to the symbols, holidays, history, and ethics of our heritage as well as beginning Hebrew-readiness work.

Children enrolled in Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades attend a 1½ hour Sunday morning session either 9:00am-10:25am or 10:40am-12:05pm.

    Middle School
Grades 3 and 4 (Alef & Bet) meet for 5½ hours per week.
Sunday (Early session) 9:00am plus Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00-6:00pm.
    or
Sunday (Late session) 10:40am-12:05pm plus Monday and Wednesday, 4:00-6:00pm.

Grades 5, 6, and 7 (Gimel, Dalet, Hei) meet 5 per week, Sunday 9:00am-12:05pm plus either Tuesday or Wednesday, 4:00-6:00pm.

Based on recommendations of the teacher or the Director, tutoring is available for children who require additional instruction.

    Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program
Our formal religious school course of study culminates in the graduation from Chai School and life long Jewish learning. The celebration of becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is seen as a milestone along the way to graduation. An integral part of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah program is a special family education seminar led by the Cantor during Sunday school hours for the Hei Class. In addition to reviewing cantillation and prayer, the Cantor touches on a variety of topics crucial to Jewish literacy. For more information, refer to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Handbook.

    Torah Readers' Club
The goal of the Club, for grades 5 & 6, is to meet for eight weeks and learn Torah "trope" - the melodies used for chanting the Torah. At the end of eight weeks, interested Club Members can read from the Torah at a Shabbat afternoon Mincha service.

The club meets meets on Saturday mornings 10:00 -10:30 am before Jr. Congregation in the school wing.

Members are required to know the Aleph-bet and have a basic Hebrew reading ability.

Send the application form with $10 (check made out to B'nai Tikvah) to cover the cost of materials.
